Meanwhile, closer to his current home, Albom becomes involved with a Detroit pastor-a reformed drug dealer and convict-who preaches to the poor and homeless in a decaying church with a hole in its roof. Feeling unworthy, Albom insists on understanding the man better, which throws him back into a world of faith he'd left years ago. Albom's first nonfiction book since Tuesdays with Morrie, Have a Little Faith begins with an unusual request: an eighty-two-year-old rabbi from Albom's old hometown asks him to deliver his eulogy. What if our beliefs were not what divided us, but what pulled us together In Have a Little Faith, Mitch Albom offers a beautifully written story of a remarkable eight-year journey between two worlds-two men, two faiths, two communities-that will inspire readers everywhere.

5/12/2023 0 Comments Novel about isadora wingBut it does get better as you age and the things you value change. Really, the best marriages are third and fourth marriages, when everybody’s too tired. I’m not sure I ever appreciated stability when I was younger. First of all, you’ve made your peace with a lot of things, you’ve experienced a lot of things, and you’re in a position to appreciate stability. You’re not really meant to be married until you’re over 50, because when you’re young, you’re jumpy and you want to taste everything, so it’s very hard to be married. She suddenly becomes aware of what she is missing. The whole fantasy of marriage is a sick trick on women. The novel talks about its main heroine Isadora Wing, a married woman in her twenties seeking to break out from the American setting of what is expected of a wife, she embraces the new feminine consciousness within her and finds freedom from her boring marriage ( Butler, 1987). Women really think that it’s all about the ring and a $10,000 wedding dress by Carolina Herrera or Vera Wang. If you want to see them played out, just go read one of those marriage magazines. Jong: We all have tremendous fantasies about marriage. And you expected your husband not to desire any other women. … You expected not to desire any other men after marriage. … What about all those other longings, which after a while marriage did nothing much to appease. Wing: What is marriage anyway? Even if you loved your husband, there came that inevitable year when fucking him turned bland. 5/12/2023 0 Comments Jon bon jovi 90sAnd what a riff, one of the rare instances of Bon Jovi verses trumping the refrain. Maybe they were deflated by the fact Bon Jovi of all people perfected its jangle-metal sound a few years earlier with the Gin Blossoms-on-steroids anthem “Have a Nice Day,” which doesn’t sound crazily different from “It’s My Life” and features a far less memorable chorus, but may be more satisfying in its overall power and groundswell. Released in 2008, Accelerate was R.E.M.’s most aggressive album in years, and it was nice to hear one of the best rock bands of all-time so furious and amped-up again, but not a ton of its songs stuck beyond the rush of the sound itself. And someone better call Dashboard Confessional about the bridge: “Your clothes are still scattered all over our room / This whole place still smells like your cheap perfume.” “Baby I want you, like the roses want the rain!” Jon Bon Jovi shrieks, for what won’t be the last instance of rose imagery on 1992’s Keep the Faith, and he follows it with an even more emo killer: “You know I need you / Like a poet needs the pain!” And if you thought it couldn’t get even more skyward from there, in crashes the chorus built on the same chord progression as “Don’t Stop Believin’” (to which Bon Jovi winks, maybe unknowingly, “I still believe” at one point). Hordes of well-wishers came to Andrew Jackson’s New Year’s Day receptions.Īs the town grew, the New Year’s Day reception lines grew longer. (Presidents were expected to pay for their guests’ refreshments out of pocket until the time of Calvin Coolidge.) Refreshments were either very modest or not included. The purpose was to express cordiality to the general public. Public Presidential receptions differed somewhat from official or private ones. Thus, on New Year’s Day, 1801, the doors were open to any and all persons in Washington who wished to come by, shake his hand and exchange greetings.Ī year later, Jefferson, urbane and sophisticated, followed suit and cordially greeted any and all who wished to shake his hand on New Year’s Day. No formal invitations were needed.Īs Chief Occupant in the new President’s House in Washington, especially in a centennial year, Adams believed it was the “people’s” house, and it was incumbent upon him, its first resident, to extend hospitality. Poseidon retaliated by afflicting Minos’s wife Pasiphae with a bizarre passion for the bull Poseidon had sent, such that she even mated with it. Minos wanted to keep that very fine bull for himself, so he sacrificed a different, and inferior, creature. Poseidon, the powerful god of the sea, had sent a magnificent bull to King Minos to sacrifice to Poseidon, acts of sacrifice and praise being very important to the gods, even if they have to provide assists. In Greek mythology, Ariadne was a princess of Crete, daughter of King Minos and brother of the Minotaur. It seeks to redress the ways in which these stories have traditionally been told from the male point of view, and focuses on “the price paid for the resentment, the lust and the greed of arrogant men.” This book turns the tale of Ariadne into a “herstory.” Ariadne is another retelling of Greek myths, this one from the perspective of the women involved in the stories. 5/11/2023 0 Comments Dalrymple the anarchyIn his familiar passionate manner, Dalrymple cuts through the stodge that pervades a lot of writing on history to serve up a book that has it all - the compulsive pull of a thriller, the erudition of a significant piece of non-fiction, and the loveliness of a piece of literature. In what is easily his most ambitious and arguably his most engrossing work, the Scottish historian and writer makes a case that the empire was won not on the strength of military superiority, but as a result of the cunning of a corporate house that was helped along by amoral Indian bankers who financed its operations. The Anarchy, a story of how a “dangerously unregulated” private joint stock company, housed in a nondescript London building, raised an enormous army and went on to ravage the Indian subcontinent.
